Geeks aren’t emotionless. They do, however, have a weaker emotion muscle over analytical muscle. Geeks look at things logically. They stive to be Mr. Spock.
That being said, it doesn’t mean that you should explain all your desires from IT in statistical terms. It doesn’t mean that you should only demand projects on threats of job security. Your best bet to get something done by IT is through Maslow’s other categories giving them something to learn.
Geeks love to learn something new. If it helps others to realize their potential at the same time…that’s even better. Your challenge is to get them to switch from analytical to emotional thinking. To do so, paint a picture for them of what they will learn. Appeal to the rewards of what they will learn. If financially possible, throw in that they can add a new technological approach to the situation (icing on the cake). If the geek trusts you (and that is something that will take time), they will believe emotionally and logically that they will be a major contributor to the organization but more importantly…learn something new.
