I need a report!

Every company has its own process for submitting requests. Sometimes it feels like your request for a simple report winds up in some big black hole…never to be heard about again.

For this reason, it is important for you to find out the process. Find out the procedures your techie must follow. Get it in writing. Ask questions on how you will be kept informed about the status of your request. Find out the contact information of the person that will be responsible for your request during each stage as the request turns into a project…into code…into implementation. Ask who the contact is during the maintenance when something breaks.

This is very important information that you have the right to know. Get it in writing. The closer you follow the process, the better chances you have in getting your request granted and acted upon.

Walking up to the programmer is never a good idea. The programmer understands the code. He/she does not have knowledge on how your change could break something else.

Do your self a favor … find out the process and stick to it. Make the IT department explain the process to you slowly and carefully.
