When your Geek is a bully…

I have met some arrogant technologists in my career. It amazes me every time. The geek fails to comprehend that he has a job because you, the customer, needs something that will help the company thrive.

Seth Godin had a great post on bully’s. He talks about the need for some people to feel that they have the power and control over others. I have found that it is tied to either a personal insecurity or a false understanding of reality.

If you can not request a different technical contact, you will need to address the behavior directly with the individual. Start all interactions in emails, cc-ing his boss. Eventually, his boss will request a meeting to get an understanding of the situation. If his manager already knows about it, he will come an apologize and assign someone else.

Remember, you are the important person. You are the customer. If your attitude is one of trust, you will be able to arrange for a trusting relationship with the technologist. With mutual trust, you will be able to get what you need from your geeks.
