Business Architect

Enterprise Architecture includes a Business Architecture and a Technical Architecture.

Leave the Technical Architect to be chosen by your Technology group (either the Chief Information Officier or Chief Technology Officier).

As a Business Architect, I’m hired by either the business side or the technology side of the house. I find, however, that I’m more productive if I’m hired by the business side of the house.

Business architects help you answer many of the questions we posted on a previous post…

 1. What is the state of my business?
 2. Is my business flexible to take advantage of opportunities as we move out of the recession?
 3. What roadblocks are in place that I don’t know about?
 4. What direction do I want to take with the business?
 5. Are new and upcoming competitors taking market share? Why?
 6. What policies are out-dated?

You can choose someone that has:

 • Deep Industry or Market Knowledge (insurance, banking, health care).
 • Deep Business Skill (marketing, sales, finance).
 • Broad exposure to business architecture…someone that has been exposed to multiple business skills in different markets/industries (maybe even some technology).</i<

Pick what you feel the most comfortable with or what you think your business needs (like an outsider). In any case, this person needs to be able to:

 1. Clarify a vision
 2. Define a strategy
 3. Elaborate on specific measurements
 4. Identify impact on the existing environment (may include technology)
 5. Define a roadmap to achieve the vision

The architecture will include:

 • roles, responsibilities, and ownership
 • a to be structure for the busines process, function, organization

The more you have defined the business architecture, the better your technology group will be able to meet your needs. If you do not have the time or knowledge to produce the architecture, find one to help you as an employee or consultant.

Having a good business architecture will allow you to be flexible for increase profitability for decades.
